Bible Talks

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

— Paul, Romans 15:4

The Bible is God’s Word written down, in which we meet Jesus, God’s living Word. It’s through the study, understanding, and applying of God’s Word in the Bible that we grow as followers of Jesus in order to fulfil the mission he’s sent us into the world to do.

The Sunday sermon forms the central part of our worship services. Our sermons aren’t primarily inspirational or entertaining speeches – they’re Bible talks. What does that mean? Our pastors and preachers open up a part of the Bible so that hearers can understand what God says as clearly and powerfully as possible. Our job is to listen and learn well. Some people find taking notes during the sermon to be useful in listening and learning better. Some find pre-reading or re-reading the Bible passage that’s been preached on helpful. Whatever your method, coming to Sunday sermons prayerfully, with an expectation to hear God speak through the Bible will be vital in helping you grow as a follower of Jesus.

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

— Paul, 2 Timothy 3:14–17
